PAIGNTON Zoo is walking the plastic plank to go green.
It is using decking made out of recycled materials and polyurethane on a new lakeside jetty.
Adi Board, head of maintenance, said: “It may seem strange, but in this instance plastic is more environmentally-friendly than wood.
“The planks are made of 50 per cent recycled materials, so helping to reduce landfill. This is British and it is both recycled and recyclable, so it will last for ever.
“It is low maintenance, anti-algae, and gives a textured, resilient non-slip surface.
“The boards are non-porous, UV stable and don’t rot. Also, they are easy to work with and look good.”
His team has used 150 square metres of the oakreplica boarding for the new jetty in the wetland zone from which visitors can feed the Dalmatian pelicans on the lake.
Environmental officer Pete Morgan said: “I love these boards — they look great and they will outlast any of the wood planking we have.
“It is important to support companies which produce recycled products, because as the demand for such products grows, so more materials will be reclaimed and reused.”
Made by the Millboard Company of Warwickshire, the boards are more expensive than conventional wooden planking, but have numerous advantages.
Adi said: “This is the first time we have used this product, but it could be the solution to another problem, as wooden decking in humid areas rots quickly.”

United Health Foundation Updates on Scholarships

The United Health Foundation is providing $1,225,000 in scholarships for the upcoming academic year to more than 200 students from diverse, multicultural backgrounds.
According to a release, the scholarships, averaging $5,000 per student, are being offered through United Health Foundation’s Diverse Scholars Initiative and are awarded to African-American, American-Indian, Asian-American and Latino and Hispanic students planning to pursue careers in health care.
“These outstanding scholars will be an integral part of the future of our nation’s health care system and a health care work force that reflects the rich diversity of our country. Helping to support and develop these diverse, future health care leaders is one way that United Health Foundation works to improve our communities’, and our nation’s, health and well-being,” said Jeannine Rivet, UnitedHealth Group executive vice president and interim president of United Health Foundation.
The Diverse Scholars Initiative is administered through partnerships with a variety of nonprofit and civic organizations. Scholarship recipients must demonstrate financial need, the pursuit of a degree that will lead to a career in a health field, and a commitment to working in underserved communities, including community health centers. Additional requirements and application deadlines vary by organization.

Let’s take the example of the artistic personalities; when they are together on a job, they create a work environment that rewards creative thinking and behavior — or what we call a typically artistic environment.
The next postulate in Holland?s theory is that people who choose to work in an environment similar to their personality type are more likely to be successful and satisfied: Let’s take investigative persons as an example; these people are more likely to be successful and satisfied if they choose a job that has an investigative environment, like choosing to be a researcher at a University or a research institute or maybe as a detective or Police investigator, which is an environment mainly populated by investigative type of people where research and investigation abilities are highly valued.

AARP Urges Governor Quinn to Sign into Law, Help Protect Consumers
SPRINGFIELD, Ill., May 26 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — Individuals and families trying to get some financial assistance to survive through a tough economy, often find themselves in an unending cycle of debt when they fall prey to abusive consumer installment loans who charge them astronomical rates. But legislation that today passed the General Assembly offers hope to Illinoisans as it will significantly strengthen existing consumer protections.
House Bill 537, sponsored by Senator Kimberly Lightford and Representative Lou Lang, passed the House by a vote of 108-1, and will be sent to the Governor’s desk. The measure had passed the Senate 58-1 earlier in May. AARP, which backed the legislation, is urging Governor Quinn to sign into law as soon as possible.
“Older individuals, low-income residents and working families who need money to pay their bills or take care of an emergency, are often victimized by unscrupulous payday lenders who charge them abusive rates and excessive fees,” said AARP Senior Manager for Advocacy and Outreach, Nancy Nelson. ‘This legislation will help break the cycle for debt for thousands of Illinoisans. We commend the legislation for their leadership in passing this bill, and urge Governor Quinn to sign it into law.”
